Watch the meter dial
All faucets and appliances are turned off first. A dial that keeps spinning means water is escaping somewhere. Next we close the main shutoff where water enters the house. If the dial stops, the leak is inside your home. Should it keep spinning, the pipe running out toward the curb is to blame.
Hot or cold?
Closing the supply valve feeding your water heater tells us which side broke. A fading signal means hot. An unchanged signal means cold. Warm tile or carpet can suggest hot water, yet we verify that before acting.
Hear it, then measure it
Our listening tools go right on the pipes: valves, the heater hookups and any bare copper. We never put them on concrete, since it deadens the noise. A pressure gauge on an outdoor spigot proves the loss on its own. Thermal imaging is an extra, used only to add certainty.

Our ADU shares the main house's water line. If the meter shows a leak, how do you tell which building it's in?
Fountain Valley doesn’t require an ADU to have its own water connection, so an ADU can share one meter with the house. We close the valve feeding the ADU, if it has one, and watch the meter. If the dial stops, the leak is on the ADU side. If it keeps moving, we test the house.
The city's foundation rules treat some Fountain Valley lots as liquefaction areas (ground that can turn soft in an earthquake). Does that change how you fix a slab leak?
Those rules cover new foundations and additions, which can need extra digging in a liquefaction area. An overhead reroute doesn’t dig at all. We leave the failed line in the slab and run new PEX through the attic, so the ground under your home stays as it is.
The city wants an engineer's letter on our foundation before we add a second story. Does that letter cover the pipes under the slab?
No. That letter is about the foundation and the soil under it, not your plumbing. Ask for a separate leak test on the lines inside the slab. If one is failing, plan the reroute now: new PEX can run through the new framing while the walls and floors are still open.
