How we triage an emergency call before we drive.
The first hour decides most of what an emergency ends up costing, and the majority of that hour happens before anyone arrives. So the call itself is treated as part of the job. Our dispatcher works through the urgent steps with you while a technician is already on the road.
Once we are there the order is fixed: contain, diagnose, price in writing, repair. Nothing is opened, pulled, or snaked until you have read the number and agreed to it.
Find the right shutoff, fast
Getting you to a valve is the first thing that happens. Depending on the house that may be a fixture stop, the heater inlet, a hose bib, or the main out front. On older properties the main is sometimes stiff or seized, so we tell you what to try and when to stop trying and move to the meter.
Kill power if needed

My main shutoff won't turn. What do I do?
That is a common call here, particularly on the older housing near the water where a gate valve may not have moved in decades. Do not force it, because a valve that snaps leaves you worse off. Call us, and the meter can be closed with a standard meter key, which every one of our trucks carries. The water utility can shut it at the meter as well.
Does my elevation affect how likely this is?
