How we locate a slab leak without breaking the slab.
The mistake most homeowners expect us to make is showing up with a jackhammer and a guess. We don’t. Every slab leak we touch in Murrieta goes through the same six-step electronic leak detection process, starting at the water meter and ending with one specific call, hot or cold, and a clear spot repair vs reroute recommendation.
By the time concrete or drywall gets opened, we already know which line failed and roughly where. That’s the difference between a single targeted access cut and a destroyed kitchen floor.
The meter test
Every slab investigation starts at your water meter, before a single tool leaves the truck. With every fixture shut off, the meter should sit still. If it’s creeping, water is escaping the system somewhere.
Inside or outside the slab?
We close the main shutoff at the house. If the meter stops, the leak is inside, under or in the slab. If it keeps moving, we’re looking at the supply line between meter and house, not a slab leak at all.
Hot side or cold side?
At the water heater we close the cold-water inlet. If the leak signal drops, it’s a hot slab leak. If it stays, it’s cold. (A warm spot on the floor isn’t proof of a hot leak, hot lines don’t always heat the surface above them. Acoustic confirmation is what we trust.)
Acoustic locating through the piping
We don’t listen through your floor, we listen through the piping itself, at exposed shutoffs, the water heater, and accessible runs. Concrete muffles slab leaks anyway. The goal isn’t an X on the tile, it’s identifying which line failed so we can decide whether to spot-fix or bypass it entirely.
Pressure-test confirmation
We attach a gauge to a hose bib, close the main, and watch the pressure drop. A steady drop confirms an active slab leak independent of acoustics, and tells us roughly how fast the line is losing water.
Thermal imaging when it helps
On hot-side slab leaks under tile or hardwood, a thermal scan adds a useful second opinion. We use it when it confirms what we’re already hearing, not as a routine step. Most slab leaks don’t need it.

On every Murrieta slab leak we’ve handled, the failing in-slab line gets rerouted overhead through the attic, never patched through the concrete. Two reasons, and we walk every homeowner through them before we touch anything.
One: if one section of a buried copper run has failed, the rest of that run is statistically at risk of failing soon after. Patching one spot is the first of several. Two: the demo work itself, concrete saw, jackhammer vibration, exposed pipe getting bumped, can disturb adjacent pipe enough to cause the next leak. The cheapest-looking option becomes the most expensive one.
New line, run above the slab
We route new PEX up the wall and across the ceiling joists, then back down to the fixture. The failed line in the slab stays where it is, capped and abandoned. No concrete cut, no demo vibration, no risk to the rest of the run.
Cutting concrete to patch in place
Sawing through the slab to patch one section of aged copper leaves the rest of the line right where it is. The next failure tends to follow on the same run, and the demo work itself can disturb adjacent pipe.
Re-route the failing line overhead
For any pipe failure under the concrete, hot or coldA reroute bypasses the failing under-slab section by running new PEX-A through walls and attic, abandoning the bad copper in the concrete. The leak stops because that section of pipe stops carrying water. The advantages aren’t aesthetic, they’re structural:

No risk to the rest of the run If one section of aged in-slab copper failed, the next section probably isn’t far behind. Reroute replaces the whole vulnerable line, not just the visible hole.

Concerned, not panicked. A lot of Murrieta tract homes built between 1996 and 2005 used Type-M copper with high municipal pressure feeding it. A second slab leak on the same run is usually when we recommend rerouting that whole line overhead, instead of waiting for the third. The math typically works out in your favor.
What's the difference between a slab leak spot-repair and a reroute?
For us, a spot repair only happens when the leak isn’t actually in the slab. It’s at an exposed shutoff, a water-heater connection, or an accessible wall cavity. For any leak buried in the concrete, the answer is always a reroute. We don’t cut into the slab, because patching one section often sets up the next failure on the same run, and the demo work itself can disturb adjacent pipe.
Is my house on a post-tension slab? Does it matter?
Most Murrieta homes built after about 2002 in newer tracts (Spencer’s Crossing, parts of Vintage Reserve, newer Greer Ranch phases) are on post-tension foundations. Honestly: it doesn’t change much for us. We don’t cut conventional slabs and we don’t cut post-tension slabs. Either way, the answer is an overhead reroute.
Will my insurance cover a slab leak?
Most HO-3 policies cover the sudden & accidental water damage from a slab leak, the wet drywall, flooring, dry-out, restoration. Where they typically don’t cover is the pipe repair itself, that’s on you. We document both sides so the adjuster has everything they need. See our insurance section above.
How do you find a slab leak without breaking concrete?
We start at the meter to confirm water is escaping, then isolate hot side from cold at the water heater. From there we listen acoustically through the piping itself, at exposed shutoffs, the water heater, and accessible runs, not through the slab, which only muffles the signal. A pressure test confirms an active leak. On a hot-side leak under tile, a thermal scan is a useful second opinion when it backs up what we’re already hearing. We don’t open anything until the failed line is confirmed.
Do you pull City of Murrieta permits for slab repairs?
It depends on the work. A reroute may or may not need a permit: larger reroutes and full repipes are often permitted through the City of Murrieta building department, while like-for-like and single-section repairs usually aren’t.
