The house valve near my hose bib won't close. What about the valve in the IRWD meter box?
You can use it. IRWD says the customer valve sits in the meter box on the side nearest your home and should turn by hand. When the handle runs parallel with the meter, it’s open, so turn it a quarter turn to close it. Our dispatcher can stay on the line while you lift the lid.
Our water pressure suddenly jumped and the toilet keeps running. Is that urgent?
It can be. When a pressure regulator fails, too much force hits every pipe and fixture at once. IRWD says a qualified plumber should adjust or service the regulator, since a bad setting can leave pressure too high. We check the pressure with a gauge, then reset or replace the regulator, often on the same visit.
Our home in 92604 dates from the 1970s. Does that make late-night breakdowns more likely?
Age raises the odds. The Census puts the median home in ZIP 92604 at 1976, while the citywide median is 2002. A house that’s fifty years old has had longer for its copper, valves and supply hoses to wear. That doesn’t mean failure is coming, but it’s worth knowing where your shutoffs are tonight.
The water is off now. What happens next to find the source?
Stopping the flow buys time, and then we trace the cause. That’s our leak detection work: listening along the pipe and pressure testing each line so walls stay closed. If the failure turns out to be under the floor, our slab leak repair team will explain the options, which usually means routing a new line overhead.
Water is dripping through the ceiling from the upstairs bathroom. Can you stop it tonight?
Yes. First we close the right valve to stop the supply, then find which line or connection failed above the ceiling. We open only what the repair needs, fix it, and pressure test before we leave. If the drywall or flooring got soaked, the dry-out is a separate scope, but we photograph the damage for your claim.
What does an after-hours call from our Irvine office cost before any work starts?
The trip itself is $0. Free diagnosis, you only pay if we fix it. Night and holiday work does carry an after-hours rate, and you’ll see it on a written estimate before we touch anything. Teachers, nurses, first responders and other Community Heroes get 5% off, up to $200, on repairs over $500.
Will IRWD charge me for all the water a burst pipe wasted?
Not always at the full penalty rate. IRWD says that once a leak is found and fixed, and your use falls back to its normal tiers, it can rebill the extra water at the conservation base rate. You still pay for the water itself. Call IRWD customer service after the repair and ask about a leak adjustment.
